Casment Windows
Hinged at the side, this popular window looks great wherever it’s found, particularly in certain vernaculars, like the brick ranch. These crank open, or push-out and stay put, usually to ninety degrees. Their hinges most often heel-in, allowing a small vertical space between sash and frame for an arm or tool to reach the exterior for window washing. An egress hinge, required for narrow bedroom openings that must meet the egress code, hinges at the frame with no heeling. This window is the best ventilator, and is the easiest with which to achieve a sufficient egress clear area. Like the awning, its screen is mounted on the window frame interior.
