Casment Windows
Casements (and their sister the awning) can fool you. When they are only slightly cracked open, they can look like picture windows from farther away. This is in contrast to the double-hungs and gliding/sliding windows, which show multiplication of frame members when they are vented. The casement’s hinging today most often allows the sash to heel-in, making for a small vertical space between the sash and frame for an arm or tool to reach the exterior for window washing. An egress hinge, required for narrow bedroom openings that must meet the egress code, hinges tight at the frame with no heeling. This window is the best ventilator, and is the easiest type with which to achieve a sufficient egress clear area. Like the awning, its screen is mounted on the window frame interior.
